2011 in Retrospect

0 Comments 02 January 2012

2011 was a busy year for stylistberlin. Memorable moments:

January: The made to play party at Panorama Bar, with Homework,, Jesse Rose himself and Renaissance Man.

February: Interviewing Jakob Hildenbrand from Format:B, as Steam Circuit (2008) was absolutely my favourite album for a long long time. Also, Berlinale madness had caught me, as I was working at Berlinale for the first time ;)

March: The month with the qualitatively best interviews – Oliver $, Todd Bodine and Nhan Solo, Max Prosa and Ran Slavin. The Man Recordings “Valeu” CD finally got me hooked up with music from the favelas.

April: Off to Switzerland! Meeting Switzerland’s most famous hiphop crew “Mundartisten” and the makers of Berlinale’s “Off Beat (2011)” in Switzerland and Homework being featured on stylistberlin! The best party was by made to play, both Justin and Christian Martin playing along Axel Boman, Jesse Rose and Zombie Disco Squad, a night to remember.

May: Seeing the Brandt Brauer Frick Ensemble’s Germany debut at Berghain was the absolute highlight of the month.

June: Another month with excellent interviews by artists from Semester Recordings/Poker Flat, dirtybird/Congaloid, Klasse and Stil vor Talent, as well as uprising star Dooks from France and the Boom Brothers, ambassadors of Brazilian and Afro House!

July: Berlin Fashionweek madness.

August: Shooting the Brandt Brauer Frick Ensemble’s music video – was really extreme in every sense.

September: A whole row of guestlist drawings via stylistberlin began… and Josefin Winter was playing in Berlin!!!

October: The most productive month of stylistberlin, featuring musicvideos, album reviews, party announcements and many more news from Berlin’s scene!

November: finally got online as a webzine! … and many more party collaborations were ongoing ;)

December: Not sure what to pick… Best set was delivered by Homework at Stattnacht (watch our for their release on Exploited/Black Jukebox and 2020!) and my favourite party was at Boiler Room Berlin 005 at Richie Hawtin’s place, with Carl Craig, Alva Noto and Daniel Miller on the decks. Another trip to Switzerland, checking out the hometown of Caro Clash, visiting homeclub BONSOIR of the Round Table Knights and meeting Trinidad (dub noir), reconnecting with director Jan Gassmann and musician Patrik Zeller… Also, it was a pleasure to see Schowi, Palina and Irving Jr. launching a bunch of great parties and above all, meeting Oliver $ and the Round Table Knights behind the decks and on the floors of Berlin after a great year of events!

2011 was a year full of happenings. With collaborations with loads of labels and artists in various fields, this project was pushed to another level. Looking forward to 2012 and everything that may happen!

stylistberlin’s 2011 picks were great: “Oliver $” went straight up to No.1 on every chart for weeks, “Feichang Fresh” got into FAZ almost a year after stylistberlin did an interview, “Max Prosa” is a promising star in the German pop scene already, “Homework” is skyrocketing into the world, and it was a very good year for both GOMMA and EXPLOITED, just to mention a few.

The artists and albums and EPs featured on stylistberlin 2012 will continue the tradition of quality features on stylistberlin.

Stay tuned, support and spread the word.
