stylistberlin interview: Mario & Vidis on their next gig in Berlin (Jackmode) and upcoming news

by Berris Jackson

We’re very excited that you’re bringing along Jazzu for the show at Ritter Butzke* – how often do you get to perform live with her? Does having a live singer change the way you put a set together?

” Having a vocalist on stage (…) turns everything up side down” – Vidis

Vidis: We perform together quite often. Our trio is very much in demand in our home country Lithuania. Having a vocalist on stage changes a lot. I even dear say it turns everything up side down. First of all our performance becomes a concert instead of a set. People stand and watch instead of dancing while listening. It’s a totally different experience for us and for the audience. But we like doing both so we’re also very much looking forward to our DJ set afterwards too :)

You just released your debut double album which was a combination of your work from the last 3 years.*

What is happening for you for the rest of 2012? Releases? Festivals? Will we be waiting another 3 years for the next Mario & Vidis album?

Vidis: I don’t really know when you should expect a new album from Mario & Vidis. We’ve been quite busy with our solo projects for the last few months – Mario has his debut solo album ready and I’m in the middle of producing my first high profile international mix
album. These projects are important for us – Mario as a professional producer has always wanted to deliver a solo album and I’m as a long time DJ and a Lithuanian taste maker wanted to introduce my sound to larger audiences. But we haven’t been resting on our laurels. We’ve just released our Care single, another one entitled Re: Stacks is ready for release in August, we did a remix work for Jazzanova, Richard Davis and Nacho Marko, we’re also in the process to finish and release one more EP by the end of the year. And we’ve been doing quite a lot of traveling recently – just in last 4-5 weeks we’ve visited UK, Russia, Spain, Estonia, Poland, Brazil, and even managed to squeeze in one gig for our own country.

Discovered any new musical inspirations recently?

Vidis: Have been listening to the albums of Polysick, Peaking Lights, Julia Holter, and Seahawks recently. Like them all. And all of them work well as a soundtrack for traveling and summer. And it’s summer and we’re traveling a lot. Also rediscovered Kraftwerk
once again. Even offered our friend’s from Downtown Party Network to name their latest EP The Machine Man and they did name it The Machine Man.
What can we expect from you at the show on July 21?

“music from the heart, some honest music and no unnecessary attitude or posing”

Vidis: You should expect some music from the heart, some honest music and no unnecessary attitude or posing. When dealing with Berlin scene one might get a little bit annoyed at times with some “cool” and “uncool”, “hip” and “unhip”, “underground” and
“mainstream” attitudes. We’re neither cool, nor hip. We just do and bring out House music the way we understand it and feel it. It’s our own House – Vilnius House. Take it or leave it. But you’d better come in and join the party.

We always love having you play here in Berlin – but what else do you like doing when you’re in town, especially now its Summer?!

Vidis: Oh. We like the things other people like about Berlin too… We like to have a walk along Spree, we like to have a brunch in one of many quality restaurants, we like to do some shopping in Mitte, we like to check Hardwax, we like to party till afternoon, we like
to meet our colleagues and business partners, we like to go to Flee market on Sunday, we like to spend the evening in the yard of Michelberger because most of the time we get placed there. We like Berlin. I’d say we love it! Still excited every time we go there.
