stylistberlin Review: Trickski – Past Sense Ep (Suol033)

by E. Morin

Better late than never! Above all during the summer time, when newcomers take over Berlin and discover for the first time what this world-famous “Berlin electronic scene” is really like.

The German duo Trickski need no introduction from anybody. After releasing the very well received long player “Unreality” last year, Suol regular producers come back with a new EP, “Past Sense”, for the 33rd release of the Berlin-based record label (Editor’s note : founded by Chopstick & Johnjon).

Track review

1. From Above (5:58)

The 33rd Suol release begins with a 119 BPM track: “From Above.” Reflecting a nice and relaxed atmosphere, the first track of the EP is characterised by its dry claps, robotised voice, high old school synthesizers and classic chords.

2. Past Sense (6:23)

From 119 BPM to 121 BPM, from a smooth track  to a punchy one starting with an energetic kick and a breathing out charley, “Past Sense” takes us to the middle of the night into a forest of synthesizers : on the one hand, a twirling one which comes with us from the beginning until the end, and on the other hand, two melodic synthesizers popping up successively.

3. Brazzavillage Dance Commando (8:39)

Lastly Trickski seem to have found the perfect compromise with “Brazzavillage Dance Commando“, which is a 120 BPM track, a halfway house between old times and new times, featuring an amalgam of percussion and staccato synthesizer chords. In contrast to what the beginning led us to believe, the last track is bouncier than monotone.

Overview

In summary, “Past Sense” offers the listener a varied and successful EP on which every track embodies the course of typical night in Berlin: “From Above” the warm up, “Past Sense” the pike time and “Brazzavillage Dance Commando“ the landing.

Opinion

However, the Berlin electronic scene doesn’t encompass only one kind of music, like the Berghain/Panorama Bar for instance, but also that which we could associate with the Bar 25/Katerholzig. Even if both places were and are unique (Editor’s note : the Katerholzig is the legatee of the Bar 25,), the music isn’t.

Indeed, this EP isn’t to everyone’s liking. On the program: academic constructions, kitschy synthesisers like in “Past Sense” anyhow it’s a powerful and captivating track. Nevertheless, at 3”10, things get worse. An additional synthesiser resurfaces to ice us while our head begins its circular rotation and lets us forget the swinging main synthesiser.

Close to “Past Sense” but onto a different style, “From Above” reflected this Bar 25 hype: both bitter taste of déjà-vu chords and synthesisers coming straight from a child’s fantasy world.

But we end up our musical trip with, for sure, the best track on this EP. In fact, “Brazzavillage Dance Commando” ends Trickski’s last release on a high note. Full of personality, out of the ordinary and hypnotic, it reunites us with high-key synthesisers.

Very representative of the Berlin music scene, or rather of the lost Bar 25, “Past Sense” gives us the impression of an unsuccessfully completed EP, halfway between good taste and kitsch…
