The first time I made it to Wedding was to Boiler Room 003 (finally, yes, sorry for not attending earlier) – the location in Wedding was great enough to host the party from the UK and the location manager did the right decision with working with BR.

More and more event managers and location managers are realizing that nowadays, it need more than just a DJ to make a party – the crowd is interested in art vs. music cooperations and so on; Party Arty on top as pioneer on it.

Well, news reached me that there will be an exhibition and a party with an awesome line-up soon at Stattbad:

“Sunday Wisdom” von David Johannson 2009-2011

Die Serie Sunday Wisdom ist das Resulat eines Scheiterns.

Es ist Wenigen gelungen, das was sich jede Samstag Nacht in Clubs auf der ganzen Welt abspielt, in Bilder zu fassen. Als Ausnahme können Szenen aus Danny Boyle’s “Trainspotting” oder mit Abstrichen Jonas Akerlund’s “Smack my bitch up” für The Prodigy gelten.

David Johannson ist einen anderen Weg gegangen. Er zeigt nichts.

Zu sehen sind statt dessen Orte der Stille, des Verfalls und des Scheitern. Die Eingänge von 50 Berliner Nachtclubs von aussen und im sonntäglichen Morgenlicht. Der Morgen danach.
Es gibt nicht viel von drinnen zu sehen, aber zu lesen. Jedem Motiv wurde eine Zeile aus einem subjektiven Best-of-Disco-Lyrics beigefügt und durch diese Kombination ergibt sich dann doch etwas. Text-Zeilen wie “Something ’bout those little pills, unreal the thrills they yield” (Green Velvet) vermitteln etwas von dem was hinter den Türen passiert ist.

The Sunday Wisdom series is a result of failure.

Only a few have succeeded in capturing and justly conveying the moments that take place every Saturday in clubs all over the world in a few pictures. Maybe Danny Boyle’s “Trainspotting” or in a way even Jonas Akerlund’s “Smack My Bitch Up” for The Prodigy could be counted as a few very tasteful exceptions.

David Johannson took a different route.

He is not showing anything. Instead, all we get to see is places of silence, decay and spots of failure. Captured are the entrances of 50 clubs from the outside in Sunday’s cruel light, or whatever day it was. We just know that this was “the day after”.

Not much is seen of the interior but the experience could be perceived by reading the subjectively selected best-of-disco-lyrics quotations that accompany each print. The combination creates the content that one is searching for while looking at the pieces. Lines like “Something ’bout those little pills, unreal the thrills they yield” (Green Velvet) convey whatever might have been going on behind those doors.
