Column: Artists should never forget how it was when they started

“Drumbaby” from the internet

Artists should never forget how it was when they started.

I got the first release of a duo a while ago, featured them in an interview when nobody paid attention and pushed them whenever somebody asked. I bought their records and played their tunes to promote them. Now, they are played quite a lot everywhere.

When I was asking why I do not get any information about their stuff any more, I was told “We didn’t send nothing to anybody even a year ago.”

Funny what a bit of “support” or “attention” does to some people.
Artists should never forget how it was when they started.

“The higher you get, the deeper you fall.”

I prefer working with people who stay real and true to themselves and don’t forget where they started.

Meeting now the people on top of it all encourages me to keep on going as I did a year ago – those who already made it and stay successful are just doing their thing, not caring about coolness, showing off and arrogance.

A lot of mediocre and one-hit-wonder producers should take an example from the big ones.
