When I got the novel “엄마를 부탁해 – Please look after Mom” as a present from friends who visited Korea in 2009, I was very happy to have the newest work by Shin, Kyoung-Sook. Her novel “외딴방 – A lone room” was the first one I purchased when I was able to read complex Korean texts, as I grew up in Germany – a lot of reminiscences of that time ;)
“Please look after mom” is a reflective novel about a mother disappearing and the family members being left alone all of a sudden, looking for her – thoughts and insights of a life after a person is missing. It was a great success in Korea and got recognition in English speaking countries as well – so I am very eager to see how it will be received by the German speaking audience.
I read it and loved it right away.
“Please look after mom” is going to be available on the German market (of course, in German) on the 10th of September, and as Shin is participating as one of the main authors of International Literature Festival Berlin the upcoming days, the Korean Office in Germany (Ministry of Culture, Korea) is organizing a reading:
“Erstes Auftreten der Koreanischen Welle in der Literatur – the first appearance of the Korean wave in literature” the event is called – everyone knows the Korean wave in music now (K-pop) and this movement of Korean authors gaining international recognition is very welcomed by me, as I did major in literature and it is very interesting to observe the changes on the literature market.
If you want to meet and greet and hear one of the most famous Korean authors living, come to the reading in Berlin next week!

Sie studierte Kreatives Schreiben am Seoul Institute of the Arts und gewann bereits mit ihrem ersten Roman »Winter’s Fable« (1985; Ü: Wintermärchen) den Munye Joongang New Author Prize. 2009 gewann die französische Übersetzung ihres zweiten Roman »A Lone Room« (1995; Ü: Ein einsames Zimmer) den Prix de l’Inaperçu für außergewöhnliche literarische Werke. Ihr Roman »Please Look After Mom« (2008; dt. »Als Mutter verschwand«,) wurde in 33 Ländern veröffentlicht, stand auf der Bestsellerliste der New York Times und wurde von USA Amazon.com zu einem der besten Bücher des Jahres 2011 gewählt. Kyung-Sook Shin ist eine von Koreas meistgelesenen und umjubelten Autoren/Autorinnen und wurde mit den koreanischen Preisen Manhae Grand Prize für Literatur, Dong-In Literaturpreis und Yi Sang Literaturpreis ausgezeichnet. Außerdem gewann sie 2011 als erste Frau den Man Asian Literary Prize und war 2012 die Gewinnerin des Mark of Respect Award. Sie hat sieben Romane, einhundert Kurzgeschichten sowie drei Essay-Sammlungen veröffentlicht. Kyung-Sook Shin wohnt in Seoul und unterrichtete von 2010 bis 2011 als Gastdozentin an der Columbia University in New York. |
