Review: Dahu – “Deep in the Woods EP” (SYYK002)

0 Comments 02 April 2012

Not so long ago, we introduced STEYOYOKE, the Berlin-based new label to you.

The first release was by Antonio Olivieri and I’m Fine (If I were Music EP – review here).

… and we also introduced I’m Fine to you.

Now, this newly born label released his second EP on vinyl, with a digital release to follow, this time by Dahu:

Artist: Dahu
Title: Deep in the Woods
Label: Steyoyoke

Vinyl Release: 27-03-2012
Digital Release: 13-04-2012
Cat No: SYYK002

“Steyoyoke’s second release truly shows the label’s love for eloquent and surprising house music. The label’s second release by their own Dahu comes in strong with an atmospheric EP called ‘Deep in the Woods’; two crisply produced tracks likely to arouse the senses.
Berlin-based Dahu describes his music as ‘atmospheric house with delicate melodies and bass-driven sound,’ and with this, his first release on Steyoyoke, he certainly stays true to his word.”

TRACKLIST

1. Deep in the Woods (Original Mix)

“‘Deep In the Woods’ is a haunting trail of eerie synth pads and echoing hi-hats culminating subtly into a drop that combines a drooling bass line with infrequent vocal snippets.
Craftily blending a shuffling percussion with a resonating lead, Dahu creates a hypnotic journey reminiscent of rustling leaves and a walk through a dark wood at night.”

Very soft tunes mixing with a kinda muffled, yet strong and steady beat. Reminiscences of a children’s nightmare, I would describe the atmosphere of the track.  At 2:20, the track windles down – and then starts again, very much resembling the Robosonic style.

Perfect track for the afterhour.

2. Falun (Original Mix)

“The B-side ‘Falun’ is more upbeat in nature and takes the atmosphere in a new exciting direction but still retains a smokey feel throughout. Introduced with intangible vocal loops and the occasional horn stab, the song sets the mood for a more summery endeavour. In the breakdown a lazy piano arrangement provides the lethargic atmosphere where an echoey horn emerges from beneath.”

Dahu seems to favour the minimalistic sound. Very minimal beginning; in a club you would not know what to do the first minute of the track – but when the rather dreamy sound of the melodie begins, you are captured. A fine deep house mix that would fit into a beginning of a set or to the afterhour.

Opinion: It is a remarkable production, as it shows in which direction house music can be taken, but it is getting only an average “good”, as it cannot be played that often in clubs. For that, it is too special.
An exciting and atmospheric EP from Dahu provides a solid second release for Berlin’s new imprint: Steyoyoke Records.
‘Deep in the Woods’ EP will see two releases, first on vinyl from 16th March and then digitally to follow.
