Catz ‘N Dogz – Body Language 12

Body Language  was mixed previously by acclaimed artists like DJ Hell, M.A.N.D.Y., Modeselektor, Dixon and more, it´s now time to hand over the controls to the next in line, this time it´s polish duo and Pets Recordings lead-men, Catz ´N Dogz.

The 12th episode of Get Physical’s compilation comes from our favourite Polish duo “who now reside in techno hub Berlin”. If you have not heard the word yet, this collection features exclusive unreleased tracks from artists Eats Everything, Chmara Winter, Trikk or Squarehead as well as their favourite old classics tracks, remastered.

Catz ´N Dogz debut album came out on Mothership in 2008 to great acclaim and they are currently working on a follow up featuring dOP, Claude Von Stroke, Jazzanova’s vocalist Paul Randolph. The name of features artists already makes hearts beat faster!

Greg and Voitek have been extremely busy lately, establishing themselves on a global scale as artists with somethin´ to prove. Originally from Poland, the two began as ´3 Channels´, playing the Polish scene, and growing artistically and musically with each passing moment. They eventually departed from their homeland and set up base in Berlin. A name change came with their new surroundings and ´Catz ´N Dogz´ was born.

Their next move is unleashing a collection of their best cuts from the dancefloor. The duo said of Body Language Vol. 12, mixed by Catz ’N Dogz,

“We were really happy that Get Physical asked us, especially because we are in good company here. We grew up listening to people like DJ Koze, Dixon or DJ Hell (previous Body Language mixers) so it´s a big honour for us.”

“This is our first official mix compilation, so we wanted to make it very special. We knew we want to make something showing all the music we like and what we play in clubs. Most of the older tunes we put in our mix have a lot of meaning to us. J. Antoni, Rhythm Plate, Schatrax or Gant – we have them on vinyl and through all these years the records are so used, that it is impossible to play them in the club anymore, because the needle always skips and they are really hard to get! What took the most time was to find all the people that own the rights to the old tracks we used in the mix, and allow us to remaster them and put them in our mix. It´s nice that some of the classics (that we love), will be now known and heard at home by other people; thanks to this compilation.”

Choice of artists featured:

“For our own label, ’Pets Recordings’, we get a lot of demos, and we got in touch with some new talents like Eats Everything, Chmara Winter, Trikk and Squarehead. They made really cool exclusive tracks for us and every track is very different. We are especially very happy with the Chmara Winter track and the SLG edit of Chez Damier and Robert Bosco, because it adds another Polish artist to the mix; and these guys are really talented.”

About the cover art:

We really wanted to show that it is possible to put every kind of genre of club music in one mix. That’s the idea of the cover; it shows our heads cut in half and with layers inside. We tried to create an art form from different layers that completes one finished piece. When we play in the club, we play very similar and we are changing the mood very often and try to keep things fresh and the surprise factor high.”

Kind of a Track by Track Review

1. Desolate – Ambrosia is a beautiful opener for this compilation. Originally published in March 2012 on Fauxpas Musik, Sven Weisemann used the new moniker Desolate to release a softer style of music. If you have not yet, you should definitely dig the whole release.

2. Soul Clap feat. Mel Blatt – Ecstasy (Catz ‘n Dogz Body Language Remix)
For people who loved the original track by Eli and Charles: Greg and Voitek made the soulful, soft and dreamy song a perfect opener or sundowner on every floor.

3. Safeword – Let Go

Safeword is a duo that I kept an eye on for a while now. “Let go” was released on Alland Byallo’s label Bad Animal and one of the few vinyls I managed to purchase. Deep, melodic, will get you into a trance-like state. They are also now releasing on mobilee, so keep your eyes and ears open!

4. Saturn Never Sleeps – Take It Out (Sean Thomas Drumsong Remix), listed by Daniel Dexter, Hollis P. Monroe, David Mayer and the likes in their charts, the Sean Thomas Drumsong Remix is leading you to a deep, trancy world.

5. J. Antoni – Lost was originally released on Morris in Switzerland more than ten years ago – 2002. The teaser on this compilation of under two minutes makes you want to listen to the whole Deep Red EP again.

6. Rhythm Plate – Lean (Atjazz Remix) (Remastered) the sixth song on the compilation goes well with the previous tracks, soft, still groovy and is perfectly mixed to

7. Squarehead – You Are

of Oliver Ledger aka Squarehead, who is one of UK’s up and coming artists. “You Are” is a strong track that gets your booty shaking and will be definitely rock the dancefloors.

8. Justin Martin – Molokini (Pezzners Water Mammal Version)

The track “Molokini” already got a lot of attention through Justin Martin’s debut album “Ghettos and Gardens”, and “Pezzners Water Mammal Version” is adding a funny twist to the original. You will know what I am talking about when you listen to it – somewhat weird, still that typical Justin Martin trademark of bumpy, booty house sound in it. Too bad there is only such a short part of it on the compilation – I have seen longer ones in the world wide web.

9. Braiden – The Alps, now you know the track name of this one! Released on UK’s Dolldrums in 2010, I am sure you have heard this one before.

10. Gant – All Night Long (Clay & Deller’s Industry Standard Dub Plate Mix), this is a remix from the gem of 1996 and you should get it. Turned into one of the best dark, strong tracks of the year, this one is a definite bomb track on the dancefloor. I am just saying: booty shaking cool!

11. Zack Toms’ Parade – Get Up Everybody (Catz ‘n Dogz Body Language Remix) actually a track from 1997, Catz ‘N Dogz pimped up the original and made it a pumping future classic dance track! If you can get hold of the 12″ release, DO IT!

12. Till von Sein feat. Jon Hester – Out Of Love (Chez Damier & Bosco Dub – SLG Body Language Edit) “Out of Love” was released on Till’s popular #LTD album previously this year. The remixers transformed the track adding some strong basslines and made it deeper. I loved the original, but this remix fits well into the flow of the compilation. You can argue about taste.

13. Eats Everything – Trouse Hack
I don’t know how he does it, but everything Eats Everything touches turns into GOLD. “Trouse Hack” is another smashing hit by Eats Everything and spicing up this Compilation.

14. Trikk – Driven Movement
Absolutely loving this track and Trikk from Portugal once again shows that Berlin is not the only city that is the birthplace of great musicians.

15. Schatrax – Mispent Years (Remastered) this is another gem the Greg and Voitek dug out for you: a track from the early nineties. Loads of producers get back to the nineties at the moment, and loads of you are already tired of this trend, but hey. XLRTR wrote about the 2003 re-release it is “the realm of dancefloor hysteria.” Must be something about it ;)

16. Laverne Radix – Dick Control I am not sure why this track was compared to Rob Hood’s, I have to admit it is my least favourite track on the compilation. Maybe I am not into filtered voices on this one. Too monotonous.

17. Elon – Right On, Babe with this track, the compilation gets softer again, slowing down in tempo and smoothly flows into

18. Alien Alien – Sambaca. I have NO IDEA what “Sambaca” means and I had to google it without result. Well, listening to it, might be a slight reference to Samba music and the soft percussions and summerly feeling of the reoccuring melody theme might explain it.

19. Chmara Winter feat. Kari Amirian – Tucy Chacy

“There we are”, I would say. A beautiful track, true poetry in your ears and definitely speaking for Chmara Winter.

20. El_Txef_A – In

Of course, El_Txef_A, the guy who got a lot of attention this year by Berlin’s labels, cannot be missing on this compilation. Beautiful, beautiful track giving you goosebumps. Leading to the last track on the CD:

21. Tin Man – Constant Confusion is wrapping it up in minimalistic hold elements and soft melodies. A dreamy something that will not let you for a while.

All in all, a pretty cool mix of lounge, chill and dance tracks. If that is the first compilation ever Catz ‘N Dogz made, thumbs up! Purchase the tracks, the 12″ edition or the whole compilation – it will inspire one or the other night of you.
